According to the FT story, Twitter owner Musk is putting together a team of AI academics and engineers and is also in talks with several SpaceX and Tesla Inc. investors about raising capital for his new business.

Billionaire Elon Musk is working on launching an artificial intelligence start-up that will compete with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, the Financial Times reported on Friday citing people familiar with his plans. Musk’s plan for the company comes weeks after a group of AI researchers and executives, including himself, called for a six-month pause in developing systems more potent than OpenAI’s GPT-4.

According to the FT story, Twitter owner Musk is putting together a team of AI academics and engineers and is also in talks with several SpaceX and Tesla Inc. investors about raising capital for his new business.

After a group of AI academics and businesspeople, including Musk, advocated for a six-month moratorium on building systems more potent than OpenAI’s GPT-4, citing possible threats to society, Musk announced his proposal for the company just a few weeks ago.

A number of businesses, including Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc., are attempting to incorporate Generative AI, the technology underlying the ChatGPT chatbot craze, into their products.

Regulators are demanding clear guidelines before ChatGPT is widely adopted, but this is causing opposition. While a European privacy watchdog established a task group as a first step towards a unified policy for AI, Italy has outlawed ChatGPT due to privacy concerns.

According to the Financial Times, Musk has purchased hundreds of graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp. These systems provide the compute necessary for demanding activities like AI and advanced graphics. On Friday, the report increased shares of the semiconductor firm, which declined to comment on the situation.

According to a state document, Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp, which was formed in Nevada, last month. Musk is listed as the company’s only director while Jared Birchall, the family office’s managing director, is listed as the secretary.

If the business was associated with Musk’s rumoured AI start-up aspirations was unclear. An inquiry for comment from Reuters was not answered by Musk.

OpenAI, which was founded as a non-profit organisation in 2015, includes Musk as one of its co-founders. In 2018, he resigned from the board of the business.
