On March 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a high-level conference to examine the COVID-19 situation in India at the time. He asked officials to wear masks and take other necessary steps to stop the illness from spreading during the conference.

Modi directed officials to “enhance whole genome sequencing of positive samples with the designated INSACOG Genome Sequencing Laboratories”, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a release, adding that the measure is aimed to “support the tracking of newer variants, if any,” and ensure “timely response”.

The review conference, which Modi will preside over, was convened in response to an increase in the nation’s daily COVID-19 count.
